I envy all of you guys living in areas where there's now snow and road salt. This 96 car looks like it came of the showroom floor! I have a 91 Caprice Classic and it spent all of it's life in the rustbelt and never had a garage to sit in just curb parked or behind an appartment complex. The clear coat is peeling, the dash board is cracked, the body is rusting away, the radiator mount ist rusting away, the brake lines and transmission oil cooler lines rusted away and the chrome trim is getting gray from the road salt it just looks really beat up. I want to keep this car but the cold climate and the road salt really kills cars after 20 years or so. And mine just turned 30..

Call me Doug..... i spoke with Ed Wellburn at the SEMA show in Vegas in 94 before buying a new 95 and 96. The biggest ticket I've ever had was 155 in a 55 with 3 people in the car with the a/c on in my 96 with intake and exhaust........ Call me, I have lots of stories about these.... they hid the build cost of these from the leadership in the Chevrolet rod shop budget... :)

If you were just a decade older you would remember when you did not have to push brake to shift from park. It made for fun hot rodding. The reason that the front door doesn’t open very far is because elderly people who bought the earlier Caprice models complained that it was hard to reach out and grab the door to close it. GM redesigned the hinges so they would not open as far.

IDK...I grew up with cars like this, I borrowed my Dad’s ‘71 Caprice Classic 2 door hardtop with the 454 V8 for Grad Prom, and it was a very pretty, elegant and sleek looking car, fast AF, but it’s hard to look back and justify all that bulk and those huge thirsty engines that weren’t as powerful as my VW Golf is today. And like Doug commented about this Impala, it’s a frickin’ land yacht, almost takes up 1.5 parking spots, you’d get winded running around it once, and where you think it would shine with a cushy, roomy back seat, it ain’t there, where did the room go? The year before grad I was a back seat dweller when we went on a road trip to Disneyland, Vancouver to LA, and let me tell you, I looked really forward to stopping and stretching my legs, I was sitting behind my Dad, and we’re both about 5’8”, it should have been like the family room sofa back there, but it so wasn’t. I don’t know how GM managed to make cars so long that the front and rear ends were assigned different postal (zip) codes, and yet didn’t have a HUGE trunk, and with a cramped back seat. .

My ‘96 came with keyless entry from the factory... Also, the impala SS platform shared almost all mechanical components with the 9C1 police package. The main difference under the hood is the impala didn’t have the green long-life radiator hoses. The transmission was the only option even for the police version. It is the 4L60E that’s based on the 700R4, but electronic. The 60E was not known to be bullet proof, and typically died around 120k miles (I put 2 in my impala SS). BTW, the LT1 came in the police package Caprice, the Cadillac fleetwood, and also the Buick roadmaster. Also, the big reason why it looks so good is because of it’s facelift designer: John Moss of GTO fame. Doug isn’t wrong saying it’s special. I loved the heck out of mine, and one of my biggest regrets is selling my ‘96...

I think general motors was good in the 90s. The 3800 engine was an excellent engine that was really reliable and easy to work on yourself. That thing was in so many cars. We are talking park Avenues,regales,estate wagons,roadmasters,grandprix,Bonnevilles,88s,98s,centuries,luminas. I honestly think 3800 engines are a better deal now then Toyotas from the era. First you can get them even cheaper. If you want tla toyota for the price of a park Avenue from the same era. You have to wither A go way more miles. B go way older. Or C get a more beat up one. Also Toyota engines at least from this era are harder to work on flatten a 3800. Which means you can do repairs yourself on a 3800 and if you can't it will be cheaper to hire someone to do it.

I don't agree with his scoring system nearly all the time. For instance he gives this car a 1 out of 10 for acceleration for the time 1996 it would get a 8 out of 10 and I would say compared to even todays much more powerful cars it would still get at least a 4 or 5 out of ten.
