Sold mine exactly the same but in a better shape than this for 6 thousand. It was sluggish and it's mpg was unacceptable. I had it for almost 8 years. Stay away from any Toyota car that comes with 1FZFE engine, you will be excited in the beginning but as the time pass, you will realize that how much money you have wasted on quenching the thirst of this fuel thirsty engine.

This exact car was my first car and I miss it. All my friends and I would take it back roading. I could take it anywhere. My car also came with a car phone! Right in the center console.

The first 18 minutes tell us how crappy this 29 yr old suv is. No mention that these trucks run 350k to 500k miles over their life. It's not ideal for a middle aged Soy Boy in CA. But for folks wanting excellent off road abilities, comfort, and near trouble free usage.....it's perfect. If you want great mpg...get a prius and stay on the asphalt. I give this video review a 20 out of 100 points.

Not a bad review but you don't understand Toyota or the Landcruiser philosophy. Also you should read the manual of any vehicle you are going to review. You live in the Garden of Eden where a vehicle like a Landcruiser is overkill. They were first and foremost designed to be THE most reliable vehicle on the planet, regardless of where on the planet you may be. Probably only exceeded by Unimogs. Buying a new Landcruiser or Lexus 450, 470,570, in Cali is a waste of money unless you are really going to off-road. But I do thank the soccer moms who buy them for then we Cruiserheads will have a supply of premium units in the used market. A couple of points, really L/Cs suffered when Toyota decided to not export diesel powered units into America. I drove diesel Cruisers up until they were no longer available here in Canada. I now drive a 92 L/C. Yes the mileage cost is greater than my earlier diesel units, and I wish Toyota would still bring them into North America, but as goes California, so goes USA and Canada. A couple of little points, the running boards should be left on if you wish to keep the rocker panels under the doors from rusting out from gravel, mud and snow and road salt. But if you off-road in dry conditions with large rocks, then yes take them off. (Don't lose them.} Oh, and don't hang the spare off a rear bumper mount because any impact from the rear will destroy the rear doors and they are getting hard to find, and any Cruiser is a treasure and worth keeping running.

The Lexus stereo and climate control systems were significant improvement over what Land Cruiser had standard. The Lexus dealer service was better. And, while retail started at $41K the street price on the Land Cruiser was closer to $50K.

Doug is being extremely critical on this FJ80 series. I had the Special Edition 1997 Landcruiser, bought in 2001. It was one of the best SUV, I ever owned. I have driven hundreds of various SUV's and trucks, and nothing beats this FJ80 series. The New Landcruiser in 1998 and onward just don't stand up to the original rugged, pure feel of this genuine Landcruiser built with sheer dedication.

I worked at a Toyota Dealer for a bit in 1997. This was my favorite vehicle they made. I liked the engine and its low speed torque. We used to call them Land Crushers because they were so heavy. They were known to eat brakes because of all the weight. Fun Fact, When we would prep these for sale we would let air out of the tires to get them to the proper psi. The tires were up at 80psi for the trip from Japan. They said it was to keep them from rocking around on the boat. I don't recall the sticker price new, but I remember you could get a Tacoma extended cab for 13k and some change.

The most hilarious part is on the 100 series the Lexus was just as similar to the Toyota. They put on horrible headlights that made less light and looked weird and said “Lexus!” People even convert Lexus 100 series to Toyota’s with a front end swap.

Great review but Doug needs to amend fun factor, it doesn't allow for 4x4 offroad. This 80 series with front and rear locking diffs only had the G wagon to contend with in its day. Even the mighty Hummer H1 had an early traction control that only locked the wheels temporarily (although it had portal axles instead). The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon would be another 10 years coming. They were mighty vehicles.

Just bought one for 400 bucks starts and runs everything works 150k on the clock. Sounds great but a tweaker lived in it. The rear seats are missing the 2nd row and 3rd row. Plus he wired up lights on the outside in a really stupid and dangerous way. So got to fix all that. But 400 bucks for a running land cruiser locking diffs too so I think I did good.
