The 1991 Honda Civic Si -- the "EF" Civic Hatchback -- is a special car that was an early example of a hot hatchback. Today I'm reviewing the Civic Si, and I'm going to show you all the quirks and features of the EF Civic Si hatchback. I'm also going to drive the Si and show you what it's like on the road.
THANKS TO THE OWNER!

THIS... is the last nice Civic from this era in existence. I'm thrilled I got to review it!

Dude I have got one from 1990 and that is just as nice only difference is that I put a 1.6L v-tec engine in it.

A 1991 Ford Explorer (Any Trim) if you got one with a sunroof, it would be a manuel flip up. Consider this strange due to the Explorers were bigger and more expensive, yet here a Honda Civic which would be less expensive had a power sunroof. The 90's were strange times for cars.

Another quirk of the clock which you missed is that when the car is turned off and want to see the time you press the clock adjustment door and the clock lights up

I have a 2020 Si, which I love, but I sort of prefer this one. Simple and clean, it just has so much charm to it. It also reminds me of high school in the 90s when you saw these everywhere. I am tempted to hunt one down and throw a K20 in it, it could be so much fun.

I had the 1990 75hp, 4-speed base model. $6,900 base price without A/C, radio, clock or RH mirror. 38-40mpg hwy at 80mph. Best car ever. By the way, the Si models had 14" aluminum wheels. I think the owner (or previous owner) put stock steel wheels on this one.

I bought an 89 Civic Si as my first new car at 19 years old. I loved that car - it was so fun to drive. I drove it for 9 years and put 155k on it and sold it for over half of what I paid for it, even with a blown AC. It was in amazing shape when I sold it as I babied it like it was a Ferrari. The one thing that I remember that the Si had that the other Civics did not was painted bumpers. I really wish I didn’t sell it as it would probably still be running today. I do remember that I sold it to a girl that had wrecked her Si and wanted a replacement so I knew it went to a good home. Thanks for bringing back some great memories.

My dad had this when I was 3, but then a truck driver crashed into it with me and my dad in it. Now because of that my father can't run anymore and I was put in special ed because of my brain damage. The civic had a decepticon symbol on the gas lid.

The theory behind the seat-belt being mounted to the door, was to encourage drivers and passengers to wear it. The thought was that you could buckle the seat-belt and LEAVE buckled, yet still enter and exit the car without having to mess with it. True, if the door flung open for any reason, your belt was basically useless, but I guess it was forward thinking back then. My 1990 Mazda MX6 GT has those electric should belts that moved when the door was opened or closed, however you still needed to manually put the lap belt on after getting in??? Technology from back then... how we ever survived! Lol

There was a proper performance Civic at the time. In Japan it was called the Civic SiR and in Europe it was known as the Civic 1.6i-VT. It was powered by the iconic B16A engine, the first engine that had VTEC. This version was a beast with more than 150 hp!

Proud owner of a 1994 Honda Civic LX. Mine is actually called eg civic having more of a egg shape. Obviously used and abused. Still driving after 26 years 145000 miles. Have the same motor in that one but 1.5L. Honda always performs.

I remember when this generation was new; liked the CRX more. I definitely appreciate the history of the car but something about the looks never did it for me. Reminded me too much of the Colt hatch of that era? Talons, Eclipse and even a non-hatch Z24 Cavalier, Probe GT were nicer imo for the price.
Justin Couch17 ימים לפני
PGMFI was much better than the MPFI system. Anyone who had a Civic of that era knows that. I even converted my 1991 sedan with a 1.5L MPFI to the 1.6L MPFI to get that extra power.

I had the DX. Extra money for the passenger side mirror and I had to buy the radio cassette too. Loved the car. Would like to drive that one again to re-live the experience. Sadly rust got the better of it after 100,000 miles. Canadian seat belt law was I guess different as the belts were attached to the pillar. A little in the way for back seat entry and exit. They still make the North American civics in Canada.

one of the coolest design features is the glass/ visibility. I think this is part of the reasons these cars feel alot faster than they are. They are actually a bit scary / exciting to go fast in.

From Australia, I owned a 1989 4 dr GL auto sedan for 14 years. It was the best car I have ever owned. Fantastic handling from the double wishbone suspension would allow the 1.5 auto to out perform nearly anything else on the road through corners. B series motor, even without VETC, lovely reving and sounding and this was with duel carduretors and not EFI. With the engine mounted on the left side in a right hand drive car the balance is always going to be better one up driving. Honda changed this when they needed to have their engines rotate the opposite direction for F1 racing and joined the mainstream. Very easy and enjoyable to drive, electric windows and a/c standard. Very well made and reliable. Also a beautiful design to look at, I think the sedan was more balanced than the hatchback. Unfortunately the next model was a little bigger, with a longer stroke softer suspension to make it more favorable for Americans. Also a AWD version was sold in Japan. Unfortunately l sold it when it was 21 years old. Bought a 8th gen Civic 1.8 auto, more relaxed highway driving but virtually everything else was a backwards step. The latest Civics I don't feel have advanced any further, except for all the safety equipment.

Neat quirk about that generation of Honda clocks. If the ignition was off been with no key, you could push in the cover and it would light the clock momentarily.
John28 ימים לפני
Doug - the seatbelt mounted on the door was a solution to the "passive restraint" requirement, an alternative to the "motorized mouse" common at the time. You were actually never supposed to unbuckle it but sort of crawl in underneath it, close the door and - like magic - federal passive restraint requirement met. That also explains the emergency release(s) you mentioned - sort of reinforcement by guilt in a CYA approach.

A few years ago, after a car accident, I had borrowed my grandmas low mileage 2000 civic DX (EK) hatch while I shopped around for a new car. Jesus Christ, I couldn’t get over the low weight and how agile it felt. She was 85 at the time and still driving stick too, but that D15.. you had to wind the shit out of it just to keep up with modern traffic, and all the new SUVs around you seemed like dumptrucks. Good memories.

The seatbelts are on the door because "automatic" belts were required at this time. You left them fastened at all times and could simply get in and out without unbuckling-- hence the emergency release stickers.

6:25 it is not strange at all. it is cost effective for manufacturer to make the same door for all trims and models of civic and just power sunroof for SI. consider the sales volume didn't justified cost to make separate power doors.

I love this Civic and the area, when they were built. I owned a couple of it and still was satisfied with them. It's so cool, that you got a "real survivor". Awesome. I like your videos a lot. Here, I have to point out some comments you've said during the video. You showed the car for the US market. A lot of features weren't available for the US. Starting with the engine: in Germany it was available from 75 up to 150 HP. The power roof was never with a crank. Never. Honda started building in power roofs with the predecessor (AH) in 1983. Never mechanical, always electrical. Also we had power window and power steering with the 110 HP - 150 HP engine ;) The predecessor - btw - was available with up to 101 HP in Germany. PGM-FI. It was special. It was an own development by Honda. Nevertheless. In those days it was not common, to have fuel injection in small cars. That is the special on it. The predecessor also was not the first hatchback by Honda. The Civic is a hatchback since it is produced back in 1972. The safety belts is a US market feature. The structure of the b-post and rocker rail is modified for that. The little storage pocket in the back was only on the passenger side. Yes. But there is a reason. Simply, there is no room for a storage box because of the filling system on the drivers side. You can see the filler door while you speak about the storage pocket. The headrests for the back seat bench was available in Germany with the more "luxury" options. As soon you bought the fuel injection, you had the head rests. With a little facelift in 1989 the big head rest (like seen in your video) came as a standard in the back. Anyway: so sool.
