The original Oldsmobile Silhouette was weird, quirky, and bizarre. It was also the original luxury minivan, and today I'm reviewing the Silhouette to show you what it was like. I am also going to show you the quirks and features of the Silhouette, and I will show you how the Oldsmobile Silhouette drives.

If I were to list my favorite reviews, it would include the Vector W8 and this - the 1996 Oldsmobile Silhouette. It would be the only list, ever, that includes both the Vector W8 and the 1996 Oldsmobile Silhouette.

GM lost a lot of money on lawsuits for these vans, I remember seeing a small car sitting on top of one, it drove up over the hood and straight through the windshield decapatating everyone in the van.

I drove my Trans Sport to Yosemite at the end of December and it handled the heavy snow storms with cable chains very well with 6 people aboard !!!

I had a 96 Pontiac Trans sport with the 3800 V6 because we had 5 kids , it ran great and had no problems the 2 years I had it. I leased it. So I bought a 98 Pontiac Bonneville, it was a good car too with the 3800 V6

That storage compartment on the roof with the strap was for CDs. Most GM trucks, SUVs and minivans and maybe even some cars had those.

Work rented these three at a time. We called them space vans. No love lost on them. Most hated was the long nose and dash on the Horizon. One of the tech's left a generator running and closed the rear hatch. Burnt the crap outta the interior door panel.

Had one for 10 years, gave it to my son and bought the Chevy version. Kept that for 10 years, too.

When you flipped to the back of the brochure, I saw the Olds Aurora. That’s a car I would love to see you reviews, the late 90s Aurora, a car ahead of it it’s time. We had one in the house growing up. A non supercharged northstar V8, rack & pinion steering, an almost impossible to work in cramped engine compartment, for example, the starter is internal in the motor. And most important, the styling. Like the doors the opened with no frame around the glass. Just an amazing car for its time. Pretty solid tech onboard too with the built in computer for car stats.

I remember my first encounter with a power sliding door. It was a 99 Pontiac minivan, and it damn near took my brother’s arm off. It was kind of neat, though. Anyway, the styling was a service GM provided for parents of teens by assuring them their teen would get no action from the opposite sex when they are stuck driving one of these to go out.

Funniest thing I ever saw, was a Lumina, you remember they were all smooth, stopping at a red light covered in snow. All the snow slid forward and broke both huge windshield wipers clean off while they were running. I laughed so hard I cried. You're laughing just reading this. LOL

I owned one of these for like 2-3 years loved it.....drove it to Florida a few times on Vacation and it had high rear running lights and people would follow those lights for hundreds of miles at a time, I own a Tahoe now and the upper rear panel remind me of the Silhouette. The first time I waxed the front fenders, it waxed up weird, I realized the fenders were plastic, I had never seen a car made of plastic, it totally freaked me out for a long time.

Our first minivan was the Lumina APV variant and a favourite family hauler of ours. Plastic body and over engineered sub frames were my favourite quirks of this family of dust Busters. Sparks plugs were a pain to change. These are sought after now because the bodies never rust and if rust checked or proofed, they last forever. However, we moved on to the Euro Suv diesels after.

It's mad how big American engines are in comparison to their power. To us Europeans, a 3.4L v6 is huge! These would have a 1.8l 4cynl with that same power

What I don't like is how American car makers chose to wait for the Government to legally require certain safety features before installing them. Why would they do that? When it comes to occupant safety, you'd think it'd be common sense. 🤔
Jason Carpp21 יום לפני
I remember when this was sold. I found it way more attractive than Chrysler's minivans, the Dodge Caravan and the Plymouth Voyager. Why it wasn't popular is beyond me. I would've bought one if I didn't already have a car.

I recall the Chevy Lumina when it first came out it appeared space age. The van was awesome with a ton of room and its massive red lite dash and it was good on fuel. Car were better and cheaper in the 90's! Sick of all the 4 cylinder under powered over priced trash of today! Can not buy a car with a v6 any more.
Zazoo Kluk24 ימים לפני
Those contact pieces on the sliding door would get oxidized over time and the connection would be wonky after a while now they just use direct wiring from the door to the body of the car which eliminates this problem.
