The stock muffler is pretty restrictive, so if you just replace the center section, it'll sound way better.

You can’t say the automatic is a terrible trasmission when even schumacher once said that it was even better than the ferrari one! A trasmission whose tecnology was of the Formula 1.

Goddamn that dealer is shady looking, and you would think they would put some effort into cleaning and detailing their cars if its going to be featured in a youtube video with a million subscribers and one that featured their dealership 💀

I love how this car looks, elegant, subtle, beautyful, way more good looking than the gran turismo that seems like it's screaming "HEEY LOOK AT ME I'M A MASERATI!", this is way more classy and sober, with the right amount of vintage styling. In my opinion this car's design aged like a fine wine, unlike the gran turismo that aged like milk.

Please review a Maserati GranSport. They claim it is a better car with the skyhook suspension but most importantly the paddles got a software fix. Can it be true? I trust you, I live in Florence Italy and I am going to buy either a 2002 coupe’ GT manual gearbox or a 2006 Gran Sport paddle shifter. Could use your advice. Grazie Doug!

I have driven several of these cars (manual and Cambiacorsa versions) for extended periods, and Doug's review is very unfair on the Cambiacorsa gearbox version. It is true the Cambiacorsa (especially before the Gransport years) is not as smooth changing as a modern double clutch type, but with just a little practice on throttle control (like any real sports car) you can learn to drive it very smoothly. Don't just take my word for it, none other than Michael Schumacher thinks so too (see ilmines.info/camera/grJ9jcR7oHyRhac/wyd-w.html&ab_channel=dakleinm5 - especially his comment at 0.50 minutes in that video). The Cambiocorsa also has a 'Auto' mode which is quite smooth (although will tend to wear the clutch a little faster). Also Cambiocorsa reliability is not as bad as Doug makes out, although definitely not perfect. The engine is simply fantastic (and sounds as good as a modern Maserati, especially with some simple exhaust system modifications). The stuff that really counts (power, torque, handling and exhaust sound) are outstanding. I agree the styling of the convertible is superior (and more timeless) and they still turn a lot of heads. These cars are amazing 'bang for the buck'.

I believe this was actually a good move by Ferrari and Fiat. Yes, the cambiocorsa was trash, but so were the SMG's and all other single-clutch automatics of the era. I would say, power, looks, and presence-wise meant squarly to go after Aston Martin, and maybe the XKR. The mercedes CL was special, but not nearly as much of a drivers car, M6 came years later. 911...well that's a sports car. Which brings us back to Astons of the era. The interiors of the Aston had the ridiculous ford part-bin hvac, which was then replaced by the 600 button jag setup. The DB7 V12 was about the same in terms of acceleration (but had a top speed 9 mph higher), XKR similar acceleration but lower top speed. Would think the Maser outhandles both of them. There's a reason for a lack of space in the rear, there's a transaxle there for weight distribution. Toned-down 360 modena engine (no flat-plane crank unfortunately), but supposedly the engines are bullet-proof. This really is a bargain i'd take one in blue over tan.

Only in america 20 k for a fast car another 30 k to maintain and tax a year. So it is actually 50K. If 50 K it is 100K car. So there is no one gets to have 20 30 k extra to keep a car on the side or drive as a first car.

Interesting. I’d consider it, mainly, just because it’s a Maserati. But I can get a clean, excellent condition Porsche 996 Carrera for the same money. A better car, that will retain its value, and that can be tuned to SMOKE this thing any day! Ha! Ha! Ha! I think I’ll stick to buying Porsches...

I think the "growth" is for your wrist possibly so you dont rest your hand on top of the shifter. Myth is that you can wear some part out by constantly having pressure on the top end of it. And the easy access parking brake boot is mast likely for easier access to adjust the e brake cable. All obviously my opinion.

This car is so underwhelming. It’s a Maserati but not in the way that evokes pride in its owner. It became a bargain because it was designed as if it was on a tight budget which shows very much so. The design alone... For a person who lacks knowledge of cars could believe it was a Skoda or a sporty Volvo. I am not ranting by the way, but even when putting aside the maintenance issues, it is still a horrible car, though, better than the 3200 gt looks wise

Here we go again with Doug not doing his homework . First, none of them came with an "automatic" they were all 6 sp manuals, this particular model is minus the hydraulic F1 shifting. The F1 gearbox is the desirable option, same F1 gearbox the F430 was offered. And when Doug reviews the 430 he never mentions it has an 'automatic' option. I have a 2006 Gran Sport and driving in manual mode is how it was meant to be driven and I can promise you the shifts have been tightened up, not a F430 levels, but tighter. And there's a module you can add to make it even tighter, the F1 shifting is the reason to get this car and was ahead of its time. Today all supercars use this type of shifting. Again, none are 'automatic' transmissions, Doug should be embarrassed how many times he keeps saying it, because it shows his ignorance and limited ability to grasp the mechanics of vehicles.

AkiKimurr6 חודשים לפני
He just doesn't like the car and shows it everywhere he can even when it makes absolutely no sense. And yeah, this engine differs from 430's unit quite significantly and it is not derived: this is the first vehicle where this engine appeared, so this is more of a Maserati powerplant, rather than Ferrari, read about cars a bit before reviewing them, Doug, please.

A lot of cars back in the day only had mirrors and vanity lights on the passenger's side. The theory was that only the passenger should be preening and distracting themselves by peering in a mirror...the driver should be looking at the road. Of course, back in the day they did not have "infotainment" screens to distract both front seat passengers. Ah, progress.

The owner kept this car in a very poor condition. 1. Scratch marks all over the dam interior. 2. Dirty, scratched and damaged buttons. 4. Leather not maintained (seats look like an elephant with sandpaper back sat in them) 5. Aftermarket infotainment.
Andrew Lamkin7 חודשים לפני
Just a couple critiques. First, this is a somewhat rough looking example. The interior looks pretty beat. Yeah, mine has sticky buttons too but this looks like a beat up interior after getting covered in an entire bottle of Vaseline! Second, under the center arm rest there is usually a CD player that also had an SD slot and a slot for the nav disks. Looks like some sort of cheap vinyl wedge was stuffed under it when it was removed. Third, I know you don't like the Cambiocorsa transmission but its actually pretty sweet once you get the hang of it. While mine hasn't been trouble free its been pretty reliable. The Formula Dynamics Drive By Wire and aftermarket ECM make a HUGE difference when driven In sport mode. If you want nice crisp fast shifts, shift at 4-5K+ rpms with some skinny pedal! And lastly, the cambiocorsa technically has the exact same transmission as is in the car you tested. The clutch is even the same part number if I remember correctly. While it has an auto mode, its not actually and automatic transmission. The difference is that the clutch is engaged and the transmission is shifted via an electro/hydraulic system and that is what can make things complicated. Its essentially the same F1 system found in the 360 and f430 Ferraris. If you're ever in the DC suburbs and want to drive one with some suspension, exhaust and engine mods come take mine for a spin. It might change your mind. I still can't believe how cheap these sell for!

Hi doug, have to disagree with you. I just bought a coupe a couple hours ago with an auto transmission and i am i LOVE. These cars are an absolute bargain

Cambiocorsa is not a "sequential automatic transmission," it's just a single-clutch automated manual transmission.

I love Maseratis! But...as many people have said already and I've heard it before... They're not very reliable. Could someone enlighten me as to the kind of stuff that tends to go wrong with them? Do they tend to have issues like 1/month, 1/year, or somewhere in between? Just kinda curious

The space under the center storage area is used by the navigation computer
Andrew Marshall8 חודשים לפני
Quite a lot of inaccuracies in this review. The gear lever boot has the different leather piece on one side so as to provide the 3/4 plane alignment for the shifter (it pushes the lever gently into pace) You may ask why Maserati didn't just use a spring, but that would be to not understand the Italian approach to functional design! I have a manual Spyder and this feature works well. The Sport button does 2 things : firstly it stiffens the suspension (assuming that the Skyhook system is fitted to US cars) and secondly it brings in a more aggressive throttle map. On Cambiocorsa cars it also speeded up the gear change timings. If you noticed no difference when you pushed it, you either have a fault, or you're just insensitive! The space under the centre consul cubby is used for the car phone kit and the sat nav CD mechanism, (so, people DO know why the cubby is small!!!) You look like a big guy, so it's hardly surprising that you don't fit properly in the rear seats. (it also helps if you don't try getting into the car in the most awkward, ham fisted way possible) A smaller adult or large child will get in easily and be comfy for sure. The boot (trunk to you) space is actually pretty good - easily accommodating 2 weeks touring luggage. Yes, it's not the size of a Mercedes wagon, or a Chevvy Suburban, but then again, it's a hand built Maserati sports coupe with a Ferrari engine and Italian designer good looks! This is a 176+mph car, capable of hitting 60mph in a smidge under 5 seconds. That's plenty fast even today, and was even more impressive 16 years ago.

Had one of these for two years. Bought it for $16k, sold it for $16k. Bright red, 6speed, tan interior. Never had any major issues out of 30k miles. Super raged that beast, hated the attention though. I always told people their minivans/SUVs are worth more. Heater core replacement was a PITA, but only cost $89 if you get the Fiat part, entire dash has to get removed, but at least you don't have to evacuate the A/C.
